I grew up in Brooklyn, and my dad drove a taxi.

His was the only paycheck, and nobody in my house had a bank account.

I got a full scholarship to Brown, and my first week on campus somebody handed me a credit card with a $1,500 limit.

Nobody explained a single thing about it.

By graduation I had four maxed-out cards and about $20,000 of debt, and I hid most of it from my family.

Then I became a teacher in Canarsie making about $40K a year, and the interest alone was costing me hundreds every month.

What changed it was really simple.

I read one money book in two days, then went through my old statements with a highlighter.

It was ridiculous how much of my spending was unconscious.

I moved into my mom’s basement, babysat and tutored, and put over $1,100 a month on that debt.

Eighteen months later, in October 2015, I made the last payment.

I’m not telling you this so you think I’m special, because I’m really not.

I just finally got the class nobody gave me, and Thursday I’m giving it to you.

Back in 2015 I posted a video about credit card balances.

It wasn’t fancy, it was me and a camera.

A viewer who goes by hopheadfred59 left a comment saying their score went from a 524 to a 639 in one month.

Another viewer wrote that their score went from 550 to 708 in less than a month.

Somebody else added 115 points, and on another of my credit videos, one viewer went from the low 500s to over 760.

These aren’t my students, they’re just people who watched a free video and actually did the thing.

Everybody tells you to pay your card on time, and you should.

But here’s the part nobody explains.

Your card has two important dates, the statement date and the due date.

The due date is when you avoid interest.

The statement date is when your balance gets reported to the credit bureaus.

So if you spend $1,200 on a card with a $1,500 limit, then pay it off on the due date, your score still saw a card that was 80% used.

That’s why your score won’t move even though you’re doing everything “right”.
